Biochar

Biochar is a porous, carbon-rich material that is made from biomass through a thermochemical conversion process in a limited oxygen environment. Put simply, it’s a form of charcoal. Jump here to see how our Pyrocal CCT system produces biochar at scale and in a controlled emissions environment.

Whilst biochar has gained prominence in recent times due to its ability to capture and store carbon, its benefits were being realised thousands of years ago by the indigenous peoples of the Amazon, who mixed a combination of charcoal and organic matter into the soil to improve soil fertility.

Agriculture is driving strong growth for biochar globally, with a projected CAGR of 11.5% between 2023-2030 to reach USD 4.26B. This, combined with the insatiable demand for biochar carbon offset credits, presents a compelling investment proposition for biochar production.

Feedstock

Pyrocal’s CCT system is optimized to produce biochar and energy from agricultural and forestry waste biomass such as nutshells and woodchip, and biosolids from the sewage treatment process. The yield, properties and value of the biochar varies depending on the feedstock.

Pyrocal has analyzed and trialled a wide range of feedstock, contact us to find out more.

Biochar Benefits

The benefits of biochar are well researched and documented globally. It improves soil fertility through increasing nutrient and water retention and microbial activity; immobilises heavy metals and organic pollutants in soil and water; and improves animal health when used as a feed supplement.

Biochar’s scientifically proven ability to capture and store carbon in a stable form for hundreds or thousands of years, makes it one of the leading Carbon Dioxide Removal methods.

Applications

Reflecting its benefits and new fields of research, biochar has a broad and growing range of applications including agriculture, aquaculture, landscape & garden supplies, soil remediation, water treatment, biogas production and building materials.

Pyrocal’s Biochar

At Pyrocal’s demonstration and R&D facility, certified organic biochar is produced from nutshell waste and sold under the Terix brand into horticulture and landscape & garden supplies. Please contact us to inquire about our biochar.
